A Lake District restaurant manager has been handed a prestigious national award.

Joel Pennington, who works at Cottage in the Wood in Whinlatter, near Keswick, was presented with the Rising Star at the National Restaurant Awards.

Independently judged, the Rising Star Awards shine a light on emerging talent within the UK’s restaurant industry, recognising front-of-house professionals, sommeliers and chefs who are making their mark.

Joel joined fellow nominees for a special lunch, where they had the opportunity to connect with their peers.

Afterwards, each of the 25 members of the class of 2026 was presented with a trophy to mark their inclusion.

Joel said: “The start of this year has been incredible, and I really can’t take in what’s going on.

“I’m sure at some point it will all calm down, and I can take stock and make sense of it all.

“All I can say is that I’m truly grateful for the support of Jack and Beth and the whole team at The Cottage in the Wood, who have all played a part in helping me grow as a hospitality professional – thank you to you all.”

Beth Bond, co-owner of the Michelin-starred The Cottage in the Wood, added: “Joel embodies what this industry is all about: enthusiasm, dedication, sheer hard work and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in at every level.

“At the end of the day, you’re only as good as the team you have around you. Massive congratulations to Joel, you’re a credit to Cumbria and to the team – well done!”
