A Lake District restaurant manager has won a prestigious competition.
Joel Pennington, of Cottage in the Wood at Whinlatter, near Keswick, has been crowned Gold Service Scholar for 2026.
Joel was among 10 front-of-house staff who competed in the scholarship final earlier this year at Kerridge’s Bar & Grill, Corinthia London.
Finalists were tasked with preparing and delivering a three-course lunch for VIP guests under intense scrutiny from senior industry judges.
As the overall winner, Joel will now receive a tailored development plan, including placements in leading international restaurants such as Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and Hong Kong.
Additional opportunities include working at a garden party or state banquet at Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace, an individual mentorship programme, and a visit to Laurent-Perrier in Champagne.
All finalists will benefit from a wide range of development opportunities, including a trip to Porto courtesy of Graham’s Port, a bespoke development package at EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland, stages at leading restaurants, and automatic membership of the Team Gold alumni network.
Founded in 2012, the Gold Service Scholarship was created to inspire and nurture the next generation of hospitality professionals in food and beverage service. Through mentoring, travel, and placement opportunities, the programme develops rising talent and helps shape the leaders of tomorrow.
Now in its 13th year, the Scholarship continues to champion the craft of service, recognising individuals aged between 22 and 30 who embody professionalism, warmth, and excellence in guest experience.
Joel said: “Words really can’t describe how I feel, I’m truly lost for words.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has been part of my hospitality journey and everyone who has supported me throughout this process, including Jack and Beth Bond and the rest of the team at The Cottage in the Wood.
“I could only dream of achieving this last year, especially as I only made it through to the early stages.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunities this will provide and, above all, to sharing my learning with my colleagues and encouraging the next generation to consider a career in front-of-house.”
Beth, co-owner of the Michelin-starred The Cottage in the Wood, added: “Joel is a credit to the hospitality industry and a credit to us.
“He is diligent, hardworking, dedicated, and a complete professional in all that he does, and we couldn’t be prouder of what he’s achieved in such a short space of time.”
