Profile
The Oak won the Contemporary Restaurant of the Year category.
The Oak at Curthwaite is a modern fine dining pub and restaurant in the heart of the village of Curthwaite, just west of Carlisle, run by acclaimed local chef and restaurateur James Hill.
Serving award-winning modern-British food and exemplary drinks in a buzzy, unpretentious atmosphere, it is a real reflection of his Cumbrian roots and commitment to delivering an exceptional restaurant experience with Cumbrian produce front and centre.
Opened in 2024 the goal is to establish a reputation for bringing high end but good value food with contemporary dining to the area. James and his brigade of chefs serve seasonally led, ever-evolving menus that combine fantastic local ingredients with elegant, innovative cooking and culinary flair.
The Oak offers an a la carte menu, the 1711 tasting menu with optional bevvie (drink) pairings and a set price Sunday lunch menu.
Menus change weekly, and seasonally.
The Oak is open Wednesday to Saturday evenings for dinner, as well as Friday, Saturday lunchtimes and from noon on Sundays.
Last booking on an evening 8.45pm. Last booking on a Sunday 4pm.
James Hill, head chef and owner
James cut his culinary teeth in some of the North West’s most well-respected country house hotels, as well as at the then Gordon Ramsay-operated Angela Hartnett at The Connaught, London.
A true champion of the Cumbrian region, James has owned and operated a number of restaurants in the area. At Lounge on the Green he achieved 2 AA Rosettes, Michelin Recognition, and Very Good in The Good Food Guide, and he hopes to replicate this now here at The Oak at Curthwaite.
