A hotel, event space and shops are included in plans to bring more of the Jennings Brewery site in Cockermouth back into use.

The brewery was taken over a year ago with brewing returning to the historic site last summer.

In September additional brewing kit was acquired after demand outstripped supply.

Now Jennings are asking for views on ideas to make more of the site to create what they describe as a mixed-use destination centred around a working brewery, combining heritage, leisure, employment and public spaces.

Residents and anyone with an interest in the site is being asked to submit their observations as part of a process which Jennings’ stressed was an early, consultation stage proposal adding: “We’re listening to local views before designs progress.”

Among proposed developments is a hotel within the Grade II-listed Maltings building with a main entrance and reception located in the former furnace space with rooms arranged on the upper floors to make use of the building’s industrial character.

A second area known as Derwent Yard would form an event space and taproom opening onto new landscaping offering improving views towards the river.

The Retreat would see small shops and workspaces at ground floor, with car parking above.

Planting and detailing would help soften the streetscape and improve the setting of Brewery Lane.

The River Derwent and Cocker meet close to the brewery site and with Grade II-listed buildings forming part of the development, the proposals are said to be looking to safeguard the legacy while bringing the site back into active, everyday use for residents and visitors.

Stone Circle Developments Cumbria Ltd is leading on the redevelopment and regeneration and protection of the Jennings brewery site.
